Do you smell onions, geraniums or fresh musty hay? It may not be what you think.  In the early days of chemical warfare, smells of specific agents were the only way to detect that an agent was used in your area.  Fortunately our chemical warriors have much advanced ways of detecting agents in the field now.  But we should always remember what it was like for those before us.

I spent many years training people how to protect themselves from a chemical attack.  We got to go through several live nerve agent chambers over our careers and the nostalgia of the early days of the chemical corps always intrigued me.  I think the first time I saw these posters was at Tech School at Fort McClellan in Alabama.  I liked how they told us to identify the chemical agents by smell.  We now know that if you smell these agents then you are already exposed.
